AccurateShooter has an article about a couple of ways to protect your guns from rust, for instance, when storing them away for the winter. I had to put all my guns into storage for a few months earlier this year, and although I live in a relatively dry climate (California) I didn’t want to take any chances, especially since I wasn’t sure I’d get them back out before the wetter seasons.
Personally, I’m too lazy/busy to coat every single metal component on every single one of my guns with some protectant, but I’m too cheap to buy nice gun socks for them all, so I ended up getting ZERUST gun bags from Creedmoor. At $4 a bag, they seemed to strike the right cost-performance point, although they are not perfect either. My main complaint with these bags is their size. They were too short for my Swedish Mauser (I ended up using two bags), and too narrow for my AR-15 (I left the butt stock sticking out). Nonetheless, if you’re lazy and cheap like me, they may be an acceptable solution.
Protecting your guns from rust

Hello, I just noticed rust on one of my guns for the first time ever… thank you for this post. (I admit I am haphazardly trolling back through your posts/my bad) My brother and I are both fans of your blogs- so I wanted to thank you for the rust/bag tip and I was going to offer to explain my “name” up there -just a lot of broken teeth & a nickname, nothing weird.
But I also wanted to ask you about the other post, the shooting coat? I’ve never heard anything like this. Mind you, even in the Bay Area of California, I still get much hate when I go into gun or supply shops: the perception- right or wrong- is “Liberal Dyke on Undercover Anti-Gun/Journalism Task” and that just burns me up.
Point being that there could be whole lots of items that I could use to enhance my situation that I would never come to know about unless I study day in, day out. At this time, many unfortunate things preclude that opportunity.
I would love the chance to discuss a few things with you in particular, if you are ever bored and care to use the email (yup: real name) that I provided as needed. As you may imagine, here in the Bay Area, it is a lonely road for someone like me for the assumptions made. Like your other post, I get so torn up about these “Wars” we are fighting and the real why behind it all, and the kids coming back more and more -especially from Afghanistan, now- and yet I am assumed to be some uniform-hating pinko, etc.
I sat and watched all these new Documentaries coming out about our people coming back from their tours of duty heavily wounded, yet so damn strong in heart -medical advances are saving more soldiers, but the wounds are profound and -heart breaking. Plus I always get to thinking that if they aren’t going to do the damn draft (!!), well they ought to help the unemployment numbers by letting Civilians onto base to do some of the work so they can rest up these people between tours and still train as effectively as they need to.
Anyway, long enough and my rambly, can’t sleep self is just getting started. I looked around for a ‘direct private message’ to send you and did not see one, so I hope you don’t mind. If you want to go ahead and delete this long, long message, I certainly understand.
You might want to try a couple of other items for the prevention of rust on your guns. They are #1- Marvel Mystery Oil and #2- automatic transmission fluid. Both those items have a rust preventative in them. I live in the high humidity of the SE U.S. and use them to prevent rust on my guns.
The bags work pretty good, but there is no substitution for keeping your guns well oiled and in a dry environment. If you plan on storing your guns for a while, you will need to oil them before placing them in a bag of any kind. Even if you buy the best gun socks, they still need some love and attention.
Hi Ryo,
try Ballistol (http://www.ballistol.com/), a multipurpose oil (especially) for firearms made in Germany.
Greetings from Austria!
I like Conway’s Gun Cleaner out of Southern Utah. It’s new on the market. Not only an amazing cleaner but protects without the slippery, sticky residue.
